PAN'S LABYRINTH FILM ANALYSIS
The story takes place during the year 1944, in Spain, 5 years after the Spanish Civil War, the story both showcase a real world and a fantasy-mythical world which focused on a mysterious abandoned labyrinth in the post of Spanish Officer Vidal, the stepfather of Ofelia who is a strict and sadistic officer who fights off the rebels that are against the Falangists that will run the new government of Spain. During the movie, Ofelia meets several strange characters which will help unravel the mysteries behind the existence of the labyrinth and the true nature of her existence, which will push her to engage in several tasks through the old labyrinth garden.
During the movie, there were a lot of interpretation given to the audience for them to understand more clearly the concept of the story. It both shows the political, social and psychological issues that the society has. The conflict between thr Falangists and the rebels depicts the ongoing political and social issues in the current society, there are oppressed people trying to end fascism and power over the weak people and strive for equality and peace. This shows that the society, even before, had issues which is can lead and spark a war that may cause a great damage to the society and the country, making people feel that they are harmed and not safe can lead to psychological problems, which Ofelia had, during the film. It came to me that Ofelia used her fantasy world of labyrinth as an escape and precent herself from further viewing and experiencing the gruesome events occurring in the real world that she lives in and hopes to find a solution to fix her problems.
As a reflection for the film, indeed it was a good film to choose if one were to showcase various type of problems and ill existing in the society, but the film came too dark and strong for some to actually realize the story or the message of the story. The message is truly a lesson to be learned by the audiences and the fact that in some scenes, it greatly reflects the current situations that we are facing today.
